Sheryl Jane German was born in Mooreland, Oklahoma on December 30,1952 to Bob German and Wanda Chase German. She was 4lbs 3oz, the hospital had no incubator, and she was born with a heart defect commonly known as ‘blue baby’. She was not expected to live, but she did, in spite of multiple cases of pneumonia. Science and good luck prevailed. Dr. Boone, at the Mooreland Hospital, had contacts in the medical community and arranged for her to be an experiment in open heart surgery. There was no heart lung bypass at the time. Sherry was put in dry ice to lower her body temperature. She remembered quite a bit about going to Denver and having the surgery throughout her life.
Sherry attended school in the Paruna community until 8th grade. She then attended Buffalo High School and graduated in 1971. Sherry was the first member of her family to attend and graduate from college. She received scholarships and went to Southwestern State University graduating in 1974. She worked for a year in the accounting division of the Highway Department in Buffalo saving money. She was accepted into Oklahoma Law School in 1975 and graduated in 1977. Sherry passed the Bar and was sworn in as an attorney in 1978. She was very proud of her education and grateful for the opportunity to pursue her academic career.
Sherry married John Casperson June 4, 1977. They moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Sherry was ordained as a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church. She practiced law there until 1988 when they moved to the Dallas area. Sherry joined the Texas Bar and they moved to the Houston area in 1991. Sherry and John divorced February 11, 1993. Soon after moving to Houston, Sherry opened her law office and practiced tax and finance law from 1991 until 2021. She became a municipal judge, a den mother to Cub Scouts, she served on the administrative board of the Friendswood Methodist Church, and the library Board for multiple terms. Sherry dedicated her time and energy towards advocating for women’s rights and for their financial freedom.
Sherry took pride in her two children, Clint and Katie, who she loved dearly and are both good, hardworking, tax paying citizens. Both Clint and Katie have chosen careers that serve others who need help. Sherry helped many people deal with some of the most difficult problems a person can face. She has helped people save their homes, their businesses, their retirement funds. The IRS can be cruel and heartless and she was always proud that she was able to make a difference for her clients. Sherry was a Sunday School Teacher from 1994 until 2008. She had five members of her class ordained as ministers in the Methodist Church. Had it not been for her cancer, which impacted her greatly, she would have continued in her role as a Sunday School teacher. Sherry had a heart attack and stroke in 2019 which left her with considerable physical problems to overcome. She married John Steele, who she loved greatly, on July 25, 2021. The two of them enjoyed their grandchildren, dancing, their singing club, socializing in their community, and traveling.
Sherry passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. Sherry is survived by her husband John Steel, her son Clint Casperson, daughter Katherine (Katie) Casperson, and her grandchildren William, Emma, Wyatt, and Grant.
