Robert Stephen McNickle was born on October 26, 1943 in Pratt, Kansas to Dr. Jerry and Anna (Taylor) McNickle, the family settled in Ashland, Kansas after WWII to start Dr. McNickle’s Medical practice. The family grew with four more boys, Andy, Jim, Mike, Hal and complete the family with grampa George.

Robert attended the Ashland Schools and graduated with the class of 1961. The Ashland Track team of 1961 won the Kansas State Track Meet with the 110, 220, 440 individual race won by Robert. Ashland Tract team also won the Mile Relay race. Robert attended the University of Kansas with a Track Scholarship. He joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Frat. He earned a BA degree in History in 1967. Robert and Sally Kohl met at Kansas University, where she was finishing her education degree. They were united in marriage 5 months later on August 17, 1968. They made homes in Overland Park, Wichita, Leawood and Ashland, Kansas. Sally has taught different elementary levels in each city. In Ashland two daughters were born Jessia and Jill. Robert worked as a self-employed contractor, mostly in the Oil Field. Robert’s past times included playing golf, canoeing, biking and his favorite was fly fishing, special weeks of fly fishing were spent in Estes Park, Colorado with friends. Robert also loved to read and his three Kappa Alpha Theta ladies and his cats at home. Roberts leaves as his survives this loving family and friends.

Family suggest memorials sent to the Friends of the Ashland Library at PO Box 397 Ashland, KS 67861. or to the Ashland Fire Dept.

Private family inurnment was at the Highland Cemetery, Ashland, KS.

RECEPTION WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS, Friday June 12, 2026 from 2:00PM till 4:00PM at the Ashland Presbyterian Church, Sharing memories and telling stores.
