Opal Caroline (Peck) Catlin
Opal was born on January 2, 1929 to Hubert and Ethel (Holmes) Peck in the home of her paternal grandparents, Harley and Jennie Peck. She passed away on November 6, 2020 at Alva, Oklahoma at the age of 91 years and 310 days. Opal attended elementary school in Buffalo, Oklahoma, junior high school (7th grade and first semester of 8th grade) in Woodward, Oklahoma, and returned to Buffalo, Oklahoma to complete grades 8-12, graduating with the class of 1946. Opal had many jobs over the years including helping Hazel Hieronymus with her dog kennel and babysitting Eva LaMunyon’s twins and two other children. Jobs as a teenager were usherette at McDowel Theater and clerk at the variety store. She married Wayne Burnell (W.B.) Catlin on November 12, 1946. Opal later worked for Catlin Insurance and helped her husband, W.B. Catlin, at Catlin Implement Company; she also worked at the offices of State Fuel Supply and Oklahoma Natural Gas and part-time at U.S. Department of Agriculture, Harper County Superintendent, Donut Shop and Harper County Journal. As her children, Bob, Tom, Ron and Carol grew up, she was a den mother for Boy Scouts and a scout leader for Girl Scouts, beginning with the Brownie troop. She was also a chaperone/sponsor for Future Homemakers of America and chauffer of many ball teams. Opal was a member of First Baptist Church of Buffalo, Oklahoma. She was baptized in the river in back of Pearl Downs’ family home. She attended church in the basement church before the present building was erected. She taught classes and helped with Vacation Bible School. Opal enjoyed traveling and meeting people on her various trips. She remained in contact with many of her acquaintance. Opal is preceded in death by her husband, W.B. Catlin, after 48 ½ years of marriage, and her grandparents, parents, sisters, Eula Mae Hinderliter of Enid, Oklahoma and Doris Cummings of Norman, Oklahoma and step-sisters, Hazel Hieronymus and Eva LaMunyon, daughter-in-law, Teresa (Aitken) Catlin of Buffalo, Oklahoma and nephew, Steve Cummings of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and many precious and special friends. She is survived by her four children, Bob Catlin of Buffalo, Oklahoma; Tom Catlin and wife, Jo of Buffalo, Oklahoma; Ron Catlin and wife, Lea of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Carol Reimann and husband, Art of Moore, Oklahoma, 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, 2 step-sisters, 3 nieces, 2 nephews, 3 cousins and other relatives and friends.
