Joe Max McLain was born on June 23, 1934 in rural Harper County, Oklahoma, to Elihu V. McLain and Eleanor Marie (Stattas) McLain. Joe grew up in Harper County attending several different small rural schools houses, and graduated with the class of 1954 from Selman High School. He went on to attend college at Northwestern Oklahoma in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. As a teenager Joe delivered the Daily Oklahoman newspaper in Buffalo on his bicycle modified for his unique needs by friends, Glendale and Curt. Joe worked as a gas station attendant, with several local farmers and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and later before he retired he worked for Harper County District #3. Joe enjoyed going to Harper’s Café, stopping in at the Selman coop visiting, drinking coffee with his friends. On August 1991 Joe and Ruth Ann Ball were united in marriage and made their home in the Selman community. Joe enjoyed watching sport games on TV football or baseball, so he could keep the OSU teams. Joe was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Ann, his sisters Lois, Lela, Johnna, Betty, Clara, Peggy and Cheryl, two brothers Dale and Vernon Ray. Joe went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday June 11, 2023 at the Western Skilled Nursing Home in Buffalo, Oklahoma. Joe is survived by his son Mike McLain and wife Tommie. Granddaughter Hailey McLain, Great-grandchildren Jayda, Sebastian, Bridgette, Eli and Lyic. Grandson Micheal McLain and wife Delancie, Great-grandchildren Scarlett, Sylvia and Stella. Grandson Thomas Joe McLain. Kay Henley and husband Dave. Bob Courtney and wife Virgina, brothers Jerry & Gail McLain, Don McLain & wife Linda, a sister Shirley Nimmo & husband Tom, many nieces and nephews. Joe had many friends and mentors including Glen Dale Clark, Curt Buss, Terry Carter, Bill Kenney and Wager Gilbert.
