William Lee “Bill” George was born July 26, 1951 to Kermit and Mavis George. He left this life in the arms of Abraham on November 15, 2025.
Bill graduated Buffalo High School in 1970, joined the U. S. Navy and received an honorable discharge. He traveled about for several years working in blood banks across the U. S. until he returned home in 1974 when he met Becky. They married in 1975 and welcomed Jessica Maria and Chi Denise to the family in the years following and established their home in Buffalo.
His work history was diverse, but always included service to the people of our community. Bill helped establish the Buffalo Emergency Ambulance Rescue Service in the 1980s. He worked in lab and x-ray at Harper County Community Hospital for nearly 20 years taking weekend shifts so others could have time with families. Bill served as a police officer in Buffalo and Sheriff’s Deputy for Harper County until ultimately retiring as Case Manager from William Key Correctional Center in 2008 after 20 years. He was a volunteer in the Buffalo Fire Department for nearly two decades before retiring from that service. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, and riding motorcycles. Bill and Becky found their common ground in gardening and water gardening and spent hours weeding, pruning and encouraging the growth of unusual plants in both soil and water. After his retirement, he and Becky and Robin Daley opened and operated the Red Rock Inn until its closing in 2023. He traveled vicariously through the stories of its clients, and made their stays as comfortable as if they were at home.
Bill was a quiet man, but was best known for his quick wit, funny stories (most of which were true) and enjoyed a good cup of coffee with his people. Bill was infamous for his ability to accomplish tasks for which his wife “voluntold” him, the most notable being the Buffalo C.I.A. which he helped establish. He was a confirmed member of Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo, and remained a faithful servant to his Lord Savior until his passing.
Despite a lifetime of chronic illness which rendered him unable to do much of what he loved in his final years, he continued to do as much as he could as time and energy allowed including taking his kids and grandchildren rock hunting, fishing, wood crafting at the Daley Planet, and even shopping if there was absolutely nothing else to do. He moved his beloved Uncle Ron to Buffalo and visited with him daily about their British heritage and together they enjoyed a British meal which often included Yorkshire pudding. No one could make Yorkshire pudding like Bill. Bill loved music and always had music in the background while working or playing. He occasionally enjoyed a good cigar. At one point Bill referred to himself as the “communal husband” when he was helping out Mother Payne, Mother Ives, Jarie, Robin, and other ladies that were unable to accomplish a task that required a man’s expertise around the house or garden. He made sure that people knew that he was not the communal husband in the Biblical sense. Bill thoroughly enjoyed his well rounded life amongst his people, all of whom loved him dearly.
He grieved the loss of his parents, Kermit and Mavis; his two brothers Kermit Jr. and David; and the estrangement of their youngest daughter.
Bill will be missed by his wife, Becky; daughter, Jessica and grandsons, Austin and Denton; granddaughters, Kaley and Kiera; bonus daughter Gretchen, and her children Brandon and Kennedy; two sisters, Ann (and Curt) Massie, Dory (and Clay) Thedford and their children, Danielle and Cade. He will be sorely missed by the Sisterhood along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and his little chihuahua, Chenille, who never left his side during his final days. Bill will be forever in our hearts and minds, and will always be included in a good story, told Wild Bill style.
